What We Wish We Knew Earlier
The things no one tells you at the beginning but you learn along the way.
Intro
When we first heard the diagnosis, we wanted answers.
Clear ones. Definite ones. Something we could hold onto.
But the reality is there are things you only understand after living through it.
This is what we wish we knew from the start.
You do not need to understand everything right away
At the beginning, everything feels urgent.
You try to learn:
- The condition
- The symptoms
- The future
- Every possible outcome
But it is too much.
What we have learned is:
You do not need to understand everything in one day.
Alström syndrome is complex, affecting multiple systems in the body over time, and even doctors monitor it step by step.
You will learn as you go.
And that is okay.
Not every symptom happens at once
One of the biggest fears is what is going to happen next.
We thought everything might come at once.
But Alström syndrome is progressive, and symptoms appear at different stages of life, not all at once.
That means:
- There is time
- There is space to adapt
- There are stages to this journey
And every child’s path is different.
Uncertainty is part of the journey
This was the hardest thing to accept.
There is not always a clear timeline.
You will not always know:
- When something will change
- How fast it will progress
- What the future looks like
Even medically, Alström syndrome shows wide variability between individuals.
At first, that feels overwhelming.
But over time, you learn to live without needing every answer.
It is okay to feel everything
At the start, we tried to stay strong.
But the truth is you feel a lot.
- Fear
- Confusion
- Sadness
- Hope
- Gratitude
Sometimes all at once.
And that is normal.
There is no right way to process this.
You become stronger than you think
You do not feel strong at the beginning.
You feel uncertain.
But over time, something shifts.
You learn:
- How to ask the right questions
- How to advocate for your child
- How to handle difficult moments
And without realising it, you grow into it.
Small adjustments make a big difference
We used to think everything had to be big changes.
But it is often the small things that help most.
Things like:
- Adjusting lighting for comfort
- Creating calm environments
- Building routines
Especially with symptoms like light sensitivity, photophobia, simple changes can make everyday life easier.
You do not have to do this alone
At the beginning, it can feel isolating.
Because it is rare. Because people do not understand.
But over time, you realise:
There are others on this journey.
Whether it is:
- Doctors
- Support groups
- Other families
Connection matters.
Focus on today, not just the future
At the start, everything feels future-focused.
What will happen. What should we expect.
But living this has taught us something important.
Today matters just as much.
- The small wins
- The moments
- The memories
You do not want to miss those while worrying about what is ahead.
What we would tell ourselves on day one
If we could go back, we would say:
- Take a breath
- You do not need all the answers today
- Trust yourself
- One step at a time is enough
And most importantly:
You are going to be okay.
